Introduction
The Beijing Olympics is the latest instalment of my Ten Events that Shocked or Shook the World .
China exploded into the Western public’s mainstream consciousness with the most expensive Games in Olympic history. The opening ceremony alone was reported to have cost an estimated US$100 (NZ$150m).

The event showcased China’s culture and country to the outside world in a way never seen before, in the process changing some perceptions of the world’s largest country for good.

Well usually I get very excited about an Olympic Games but in this case China human rights including expelling people from there homes to build the Olympic venues . I have no lasting memory’s to share with the reader . The Beijing Olympics is the least exciting event on the list so far .

Hahah I’d agree with this! What an strange inclusion!
I was, however, reasonably excited to see Sarah Brightman at the Opening Ceremony!

I just remember how ‘military-like’ their ceremonies were – I can’t imagine….
And watching the gymnastics and the difference between the way a Chinese girl who made a mistake was treated by her coaches vs. the way an American gymnast was treated by her coaches – how a parent could subject a child to such treatmen saddened me.
